| SBY GALLERY Welcomes Ethel Hills’ “Reflections on the Natural World- Watercolors & Collages” November 1 -28th, 2008 The SBY Gallery will host Hampton artist, Ethel Hills, from November first through November twenty-eighth. Hills’ art will feature a combination of abstract watercolors and collages to be premiered at the November 2nd artist reception from 3-5pm at 4 Portland Street, South Berwick, ME 03908. The public is invited to attend, meet the artist, and enjoy light refreshments while viewing the exhibit. Ms. Hills specializes in colorful abstract landscapes in both watercolor and collage. Although her paintings suggest the landscape, her intention is not to describe a specific time or place, but to coax the viewer into looking beyond the obvious. When asked about this, Hills commented, “I always like to leave room for viewers to bring their own memories and experiences to the work. I think that’s one of the advantages of working more abstractly. The paintings become more open to interpretation, making the viewer an active participant in the process.” Ms. Hills was raised among the orchards and hills of rural New Hampshire eventually settling in Hampton where she has been painting seriously for nearly 10 years. Her works have been exhibited at numerous seacoast galleries including solo exhibits at Blue Moon Market in Exeter, North Hampton Library and Ampers Studio and Gallery in Newmarket. She has participated in group exhibits including the Mill Pond Center for the Arts in Durham, the Holyoke Gallery at Harvard University and at River Tree Center for the Arts in Kennebunk, Maine. Her most recent exhibits were held at the Franklin Gallery in Rochester, NH and the Newburyport Art Association’s 7th Annual Exhibition of the Abstract Artist Group. Hills also participated in a group exhibit at the Coolidge Center for the Arts in Portsmouth, NH recently. She has won myriad awards since 1999, including the Purchase Prize from Abstractions II at the Arts League of Lowell and a First Place in Watercolor at the New Hampshire Institute of Art’s Annual Student Exhibition.
